Disability

The Equality Act 2010 defines disability as a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on one’s ability to do normal daily activities. Therefore disability can include physical impairments including sensory as well as learning disability.

People with disabilities experience significant inequalities when compared to those without. They are more likely to have lower attainment rates at school, are less likely to be in employment and are more likely to be living in poverty. In addition, people with disabilities often face difficulties in finding adequate housing, encounter barriers to accessing transport, leisure and other services – all of which in turn inhibits participation in society. It is, therefore, very important that the right support is in place to enable people with disabilities to maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.

Below you can find a number of documents identifying the health and wellbeing needs of people with disabilities. Please note that this list will be updated when new information becomes available.
